[賓州匹茲堡訊]從五月十四日到十六日在夢羅維爾會議中心舉辦的第53屆匹茲堡民俗節已經圓滿落幕。2009年民俗節因為經濟不景氣很多人失業而取消慶祝。為了繼續五十多年悠久傳統今年擴大舉行。民俗節活動禮拜六下午由匹茲堡的KDKA[早晨]收音機節目主持人拉利雷秋特(Larry Richert)實況轉播。
現場有二十幾國的文化展覽、國際廚房餐飲販售、國際烹飪示範教學、國際藝術品展售市場。歐洲小提琴音樂連續在現場走動娛樂 佳賓。參與民俗節的共有美國(的夏威夷) 、中國、越南、菲律賓、印度、智利、秘魯、德國、波斯、希臘、保加利亞、烏克蘭、斯洛伐克、英國、威爾斯、以色列、蘇格蘭、愛爾蘭、瑞士、立陶宛、黎巴嫩、高加索、克羅地亞、南非等二十幾國。匹茲堡真是一個國際人種大溶爐。把世界文化炒成大雜粹。同中有異，異中有同。幾度被選為全美最宜居住的城市。連英國查理王子都特別來看匹茲堡建築。去年美國總統還特別在匹茲堡舉辦G20國際高峰會議。
中國會場虎年佈置有燈籠有門神等等。由被領養的大陸女孩馬麗雅(Maria Kuenn)姐妹負責前桌，讓參觀者做 [春]字剪紙。另外慈濟陳靈芬師姐教小朋友折手工紙老虎。左鄰印度則提供替人繪圖案在手背或手心。看到緊鄰的越南結婚禮服，幾乎就是中國裝的仿版。但是她們旗袍高叉開到及腰，再內著長褲與中華服裝還是不盡相同。最特別的是英國婦女現場教人用三十多根線，再依照針圖，耐心用手編繞出細緻心型花邊。蘇格蘭女人用羊毛紡毛線紗。烏克蘭則免費替人寫其烏克蘭的名字在他們的上藍下黃長條國旗紙上。許多國家都提供各種手工藝活動讓小朋友參與。
禮拜六下午有兩場中國民族舞蹈先是身穿綠綢的小朋友們舉著粉紅薄紗傘翩翩跳起[傘舞]。接著是手持小鼓併穿桃紅春裝的姑娘們表演[花鼓歌]民族舞。都贏得熱烈掌聲。晚上八點還再另排一場中國民族舞蹈。可愛的愛爾蘭小女孩穿上華麗的傳統服飾在舞台上表演他們的快步驟踢踏舞蹈。真是搶盡風頭。烏克蘭青少年舞蹈隊的服裝也鮮艷綺麗毫不遜色。菲律賓[竹竿舞]節奏響拍越來越快，令觀眾擔心大群稚齡表演者會不會夾到腳踝。蘇格蘭的高地風笛與[宮廷劍舞]也很特殊，不是擊劍。是把劍放地板上，注視著排放的劍依序起舞。
現場除了能買到各國風土文物，還可以買到世界各國的好吃的食物。國際烹飪示範吸引很多觀眾。除了希臘的葡萄葉碎肉米飯捲很熱門，中國的春捲也一樣很受歡迎。印度的葡利與恰帕提麵皮也不錯。大家免費試吃。如果喜歡再到國際廚房餐飲販售區去買午餐或晚餐。匹茲堡美華協會會長李東昇伉儷與餐飲公會的葉英妹等人，忙得不可開交的供應炸雞炒飯炒麵外加波霸奶茶或冰沙飲料。也算替美華協會增加一些日後舉辦公益活動的經費。
因為五月底匹茲堡有世界珠寶飾品展。有很多商家提前到來，順便展售。居然能看到價格昂貴的黑珍珠寶石與綠玉或紅玉。但是真正大熱賣的大約是普通價位的新穎圍巾扣環。或是耳環與別針。據說因為小商家不願付高價手續費給展示中心，所以現場買賣只收現金或支票完全不收信用卡。因此美中不足高價位的商品賣出的就相對較少。有些觀眾抱怨門票太貴會使多人怯步，但是大家還是以為戶內活動場地費很高，收的門票根本不夠支付場地費。只是為了讓下一代的小孩認識國際文化，這項傳統文化節還是要每年承先啟後慶祝下去。

Pittsburgh Folk Festival
Pittsburgh Folk Festival was established on June 9, 1956, to showcase and preserve the ethnic heritage of Western Pennsylvania and is the second oldest International Festival in the United States. It is a proud tradition of Pittsburgh and has just celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. Although China was not one of the Charter members, China’s participation can be traced back at least more than 40 years. China was represented by the local chapter of Organization of Chinese Americans since the establishment of OCA local chapter in 1978.
The first PFF was held on June 9-10, 1956, at the Syria Mosque in Oakland and Duquesne University assumed sponsorship of the Festival. In 1961, Robert Morris College became the new sponsor and continued the sponsorship for thirty years. The 25th Anniversary was held at the Civic Arena in 1962. From 1981 on, the Pittsburgh Folk Festival was held at different locations every three years due to contractual agreements. Those locations included the Amphitheatre at Station Square, the Expo Mart in Monroeville, David L. Lawrence Convention Center, and Heinz Field. Because of the budget constraint, the non-profit corporation Robert Morris College established was offered to the sixteen nationality groups that participated in the 1991 event and officially ended the sponsorship of Robert Morris College. The majority of the sixteen nationality groups voted a resounding YES to continue the Pittsburgh Folk Festival. Transfer of the corporation was completed in 1991 and a Board of Directors was elected by the member groups to run the festival.

OCA-Pittsburgh Chapter, again, participated in the Pittsburgh Folk Festival, consecutively for more than 40 years dating back to early 1960s, a very proud tradition indeed. This is one of the major fundraising events for the Pittsburgh Chapter. Dancing programs were provided free by the OCA Youth Performance Ensemble and Lotus Blossom under the leadership of VP of Cultural Affairs, Chia-Pih Shaw. Cultural displays focusing on kid’s workshop on Chinese crafts were also provided free under the guidance of Phanny Yang and Sarah Liu with Yue Fang Lee and Jimmy Cheng served as Ambassadors. Chinese foods and Chinese souvenirs were also on sale at the Food Booth responsible by William Liu and Sue Yeh and Marketplace by Kim Kuehn and Frances Wong. Many OCA members contributed to the success of this event, including Rae Yang, Dali Li, Tong Lee, Dorothy Lee Green, and many others. See below for the tivity photos.
